Job Description:
This position is for a pediatric Forensic Nurse with the Center for Safe and Healthy Families. The primary location for this position will be at Primary Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake Campus, located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This position will require response to afterhours cases at both Primary Children's Salt Lake and Primary Children's Lehi Campuses. This position is full-time, 36 hours/week, with varying shifts and hours. This position does qualify for full-time benefits with Intermountain Health.

About the Center for Safe & Healthy Families
The Center for Safe and Healthy Families is the Child Protection/Maltreatment team at Primary Children’s Hospital. We specialize in patient‑centered, trauma‑informed care for children and adolescents who present with concerns of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or medical neglect. Our team provides both scheduled clinic services and urgent forensic response in the Emergency Department (ED).
What Our Nurses Do
Our forensic nurses play a vital role in ensuring compassionate, evidence‑based care for vulnerable patients. In this role, you will:
Provide 24/7 coverage through scheduled shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Triage calls and respond urgently to the ED for forensic nursing evaluations
Conduct independent after‑hours assessments for patients presenting with concerns of sexual abuse or assault
Collaborate closely with SHF physicians and the ED team
Photograph injuries, collect evidence, and perform genital exams using colposcopy
Complete mandatory reporting to Law Enforcement and Child Protective Services
Support patients and families with sensitivity, professionalism, and trauma‑informed care

Minimum Qualifications
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice
Valid compact licenses must be transferred within 60 days of hire
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
RNs with under 12 months of experience must obtain their BSN within 4 years of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers
Preferred Qualifications
Note: BSN requirement effective as of the last job description update on 4/27/2025. Employees hired or promoted before this date are held to the requirements in place at the time of hire or promotion.
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
$34.53 - $52.25
