Registered Nurse (RN) First Assist (RNFA) - CVOR/Surgical Services - Anderson Hospital
Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
A Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) position who has acquired additional knowledge, technical skills, and judgement through structured, organized instruction, supervised practice, and through a current CAAHEP accredited program for surgical assisting, approved by the ABSA, NSAA, or NBSTSA. Under direct guidance and/or supervision of the primary operative surgeon, assists in the perioperative care of the patients and performs duties as assigned. The CSFA provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
Essential Job Functions:

Performing continuing perioperative patient care.

Implements a high intraoperative standard of quality, infection control, and patient safety practices.

Assisting the surgeon with the technical aspects of the operative procedure while, also, applying advanced knowledge of patient anatomy, physiology, and operative procedures.

Applying advanced interpersonal and communication skills with the patient, family, and surgical team.

Serving as a role model, preceptor, or mentor to perioperative personnel as a resource person; assists nursing staff in assigned room/case.

Collaborating with the surgical team and assisting in disease prevention and health promotion for the patient.

Monitors and promotes quality perioperative practice through the use of professional and legal standards, research, and resolution of ethical issues.

The CSFA assumes the leadership role through advanced practice competencies of clinical duties, teaching, coaching, delegation, collaboration, supervisory functions, shared governance attributes, and research involvement. Provides leadership in professional activities, by participating in local, state, and /or national levels. A CSFA attitude should express a professional behavior and role in the medical field to prevent harm to the patient or themselves.
Required Minimum Education: 2 Year/Associates Degree
Specialty/Major: RNFA
Preferred Education: 4 year/Bachelors Degree
Licensing & Certifications:

Graduate of an accredited surgical assistant program

Registered Nurse Licensed in the State of Ohio

Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)

Certified Nurse - OR
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
Experience (required):

Minimum of five years perioperative experience, can include military training for surgical technologists and/or operating room technicians

Employee must be fully familiar with surgeons' preferences and department policies and procedures.

The position requires the incumbent to demonstrate proficiency in clinical skills for patients. Knowledge of basic science, anatomy, physiology, asepsis and sterile techniques and operating room techniques as required via CST-FA certification. Employees must be able to accurately and efficiently set up operating room supplies and equipment and assist with new equipment.
