UVA Health | University Medical Center - Charlottesville, Virginia
Advance Complex Care. Strengthen the Team. Make Meaningful Impact.
UVA Health is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the inpatient Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgical Service at the University Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is an exceptional opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider who is energized by complex surgical care, values continuity across the inpatient stay, and thrives as a consistent, respected member of a multidisciplinary academic surgical team.
The HPB Surgical Service cares for patients with complex pancreatic, hepatobiliary, oncologic, and gastrointestinal surgical conditions. In this role, the APP will contribute meaningfully to the care of a sophisticated inpatient surgical patient population through clinical assessment, care coordination, perioperative management (pre- and post-operative), patient and family education, and collaboration with attending surgeons, residents, nursing, case management, consultants, and other members of the care team.
This position is well suited for an APP with prior inpatient surgical experience who is looking to build deep specialty expertise within a highly collaborative academic environment.
The Role
The Advanced Practice Provider on the inpatient HPB Surgical Service serves as a key clinical partner in the day-to-day management of hospitalized surgical patients. This is not an operating room position. Rather, it is an inpatient-focused role centered on pre-operative preparation, post-operative recovery, complication recognition, care coordination, discharge planning, and longitudinal support throughout the hospitalization.
The APP will work closely with HPB surgeons and the broader multidisciplinary team to support safe, efficient, patient-centered care. The role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, comfort managing complex surgical patients, and the ability to provide continuity within a dynamic inpatient environment.
In this role, the APP will:
-
Participate in the inpatient management of HPB surgical patients from admission through discharge, with a primary focus on acute care patients
-
Conduct comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and clinical assessments
-
Support pre-operative evaluation, preparation, and optimization in collaboration with the surgical team
-
Contribute to post-operative management, including monitoring recovery, identifying clinical changes, and escalating concerns appropriately
-
Collaborate with attending surgeons, residents, nursing, case management, consulting services, and ancillary teams
-
Help coordinate diagnostic testing, treatment plans, consultations, and transitions of care
-
Provide education to patients and families regarding complex surgical diagnoses, procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge plans
-
Support consistent workflows, communication, and continuity across the inpatient HPB service
-
Contribute to quality, safety, and process-improvement efforts within the service line
An average day is clinically engaging and team-oriented. The APP will participate in rounds, evaluate patients, coordinate evolving care needs, communicate closely with the surgical team, and help ensure that patients and families understand the plan of care. This position offers the opportunity to develop meaningful expertise in HPB surgery while contributing to the care of a highly specialized patient population.
This role requires prior, directly relevant experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in an inpatient surgical, acute care, or HPB-adjacent setting. The ideal candidate is clinically thoughtful, organized, collaborative, responsive to changing patient needs, and motivated by the opportunity to provide high-quality care for complex surgical patients within an academic medical center.
