Job Title: Registered Nurse - Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB)
Job Description
This role provides specialized surgical care coordination and patient support for individuals undergoing hepato-pancreato-biliary procedures. The Registered Nurse serves as a central point of contact for patients, surgeons, and clinic staff, ensuring that surgical schedules, pre-operative preparation, and follow-up care are organized, efficient, and patient-centered. The position combines clinical care coordination, patient triage, and administrative responsibilities in a fast-paced surgical clinic environment.
Responsibilities

Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures for HPB patients, ensuring accurate and timely booking of operating room time and related resources.

Optimize surgeon clinic and operating schedules to maximize efficiency, patient access, and appropriate use of available appointment slots.

Collaborate closely with surgeons, advanced practice providers, and clinic staff to adjust appointments and surgical timelines as clinical needs change.

Confirm surgery dates, times, and pre-operative requirements with patients and families, providing clear and comprehensive information.

Prepare patients for surgical consultations by collecting and reviewing outside medical records, imaging, laboratory results, and other relevant clinical documentation.

Ensure all necessary clinical information is available prior to surgeon appointments to support effective discussions and timely surgical decision-making.

Track upcoming surgical cases and monitor completion of required pre-operative testing, imaging, laboratory work, and medical clearances.

Proactively identify and address barriers that could delay or impact scheduled procedures, escalating issues as appropriate to providers.

Serve as a primary point of contact for patients throughout the surgical process, fostering trust and continuity of care.

Triage patient questions and concerns, providing guidance within the RN scope of practice and escalating clinical issues to the appropriate provider or advanced practice professional when needed.

Educate patients and families regarding surgical preparation, pre-operative instructions, and post-operative follow-up expectations.

Assist with follow-up care coordination to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of care after surgery.

Review patient tracking reports and previously evaluated patients to identify individuals who may now be appropriate candidates for surgical intervention.

Maintain and organize patient schedules, records, and surgical tracking systems to support accurate documentation and efficient workflow.

Assist with clinic preparation, daily workflow organization, and workload management to improve operational efficiency.

Support process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient experience, streamlining scheduling, and improving provider productivity.
Essential Skills

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Previous surgery scheduling experience in a clinical or hospital setting.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in coordinating complex surgical cases.

Comfort collaborating directly with surgeons, advanced practice providers, and clinic staff.

Effective verbal and written communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to address barriers to care and scheduling challenges.

Ability to triage patient concerns appropriately and escalate clinical issues when needed.

Self-motivated and proactive approach to identifying opportunities to improve scheduling and care coordination processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in surgery scheduling, oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, or specialty clinic coordination is preferred.

Familiarity with Epic or similar electronic health record systems.

Previous patient triage experience in an outpatient or surgical clinic environment.

Comfort working with multiple physicians and adapting to varying provider schedules.

Interest in process improvement and enhancing patient experience and provider productivity.
Work Environment
This position is based in a busy surgical clinic environment that supports 1-2 surgeons. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with no nights or weekends required. The nurse works in the clinic on Monday and Tuesday at a West County medical office building location and spends Wednesday through Friday at their downtown location. Parking is provided at no cost on Monday and Tuesday, while paid parking is required on Wednesday through Friday. The work involves extensive use of electronic health record systems, coordination with surgeons and clinic staff, and direct interaction with patients and families. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $36.00/hr.
