About UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center)
UPMC Nursing Jobs: Academic Medicine, Built to Scale
A $1.5 billion, 17-story hospital tower is rising in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. When the new UPMC Presbyterian opens in 2027, it will be the largest hospital in the city's history — 636 private patient rooms, adaptable ICU-capable beds on nearly every floor, and digitally integrated care environments designed from the ground up. It's one of three specialty hospitals UPMC is building as part of a $2 billion investment that also includes a new cancer hospital and the already-open Vision and Rehabilitation Pavilion at UPMC Mercy.
That scale tells you something about UPMC nursing jobs that a careers page can't: this system is betting heavily on its future, and it needs nurses at every level to staff it.
The Academic Advantage
UPMC's affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences isn't ceremonial — it's structural. The system operates over 35 hospitals across Pennsylvania, western New York, and western Maryland, but its academic core in Pittsburgh is where transplant surgery was perfected by Thomas Starzl and where UPMC Hillman Cancer Center holds the region's only NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. U.S. News consistently ranks UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside among the nation's best, with UPMC Magee-Womens, UPMC Mercy, and UPMC Western Psychiatric each holding national specialty rankings.
For nurses, this means access to clinical trials, evidence-based protocols developed in-house, and interdisciplinary teams that include physician-scientists. Nursing careers at UPMC put you at the intersection of research and bedside care in a way community hospitals can't replicate.
Ten Magnet Hospitals and a Career Ladder That Moves
Ten UPMC hospitals hold Magnet designation — one of the largest Magnet footprints in any single system. The career ladder spans four tiers, from Professional Staff Nurse through Expert Nurse, with promotions tied to experience, certifications, and contributions rather than tenure alone. BSN-prepared nurses in direct care receive a competitive pay differential.
UPMC's Graduate Nurse Rotational Program (GNRP) lets newly licensed RNs rotate across specialties before choosing a permanent unit. Registered nurse positions at UPMC span over 50 specialty roles across nearly 20 clinical areas, plus home health, ambulatory, and resource pool options.
Paying for School — Before, During, and After
UPMC operates six hospital-based nursing schools, which is unusual for a health system of any size. For current employees, the system offers tuition reimbursement and low- to no-cost BSN and MSN programs. An LPN-to-RN bridge lets licensed practical nurses pursue their RN while working reduced hours with full benefits.
The headline recruitment incentive is UPMC's Monthly Loan Repayment Program: $20,000 paid over three years for eligible new graduate RNs in full-time inpatient and procedural roles. Sign-on bonuses up to $15,000 (up to $20,000 for resource pool nurses) are available for qualifying positions. Through partnerships with Savi and SoFi, nurses get guidance on Public Service Loan Forgiveness — relevant since UPMC is a nonprofit — plus exclusive refinancing rates.
Compensation and the Full Package
RN base pay starts at $34.25/hour for non-BSN staff nurses, with increases for BSN credentials, experience, and specialty certifications. Shift differentials, charge nurse pay, float pay, and premium overtime layer on top. Benefits include up to 5½ weeks of PTO annually plus seven paid holidays, comprehensive health coverage (choose between UPMC and Highmark plans), retirement with employer match, and paid parental leave.
Find Your Fit at UPMC
From a 636-bed flagship under construction to critical-access hospitals in rural Pennsylvania, UPMC nursing jobs cover an enormous range of settings and specialties — all within a system where your seniority, benefits, and PTO follow you.
