Summary:
The Nurse Extern role offers nursing students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real clinical environment while working under the guidance of experienced Registered Nurses. The extern supports patient care activities, documentation, and unit operations, developing essential clinical competencies and confidence. Additionally, the Nurse Extern role provides training and information about nursing practice in an acute care setting to prepare for future RN practice.
Responsibilities:

· Performs clinical skills/tasks with defined competencies, including but not limited to NAI scope of practice per the NCDHHS.

· Ensures competency in all required skills and completes competency assessment per the appropriate guidelines.· Adheres to documented policies and processes.· Assists patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge. · Escalates actual and potential problems concerning patients, families, and other individuals to the RN.· Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.· Assist patients with routine activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, feeding and assisting with ambulation as outlined in plan of care.· Shadowing experienced RNs, participating in rounds, and learning to manage clinical responsibilities.· Actively participating in learning experiences provided by Clinical Education and Nursing Unit Leaders/Educators· Ability to stand, walk, lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, and patients.· Maintains an effective clinical work environment including but not limited to cleaning the work area, changing linens, maintaining and monitoring supply levels, and transporting patients / specimens throughout hospital.

Qualifications
Required
· Active enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
· Active listing on NC DHHS NAI Registry.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
