This role serves as a clinical expert, educator, consultant, and resource for patients and interdisciplinary team members, with a focus on diabetes self-management education, medication management, glucose monitoring technology, and patient-centered care. The Advanced Nurse Clinician collaborates with physicians, diabetes educators, dietitians, nursing leadership, and community partners to deliver high-quality diabetes education services and support quality improvement initiatives. This position plays a vital role in enhancing patient outcomes through education, coaching, and evidence-based practice while exemplifying Mercy's mission, values, and service standards. Key Responsibilities Diabetes Education & Clinical Support Provide nursing expertise within the outpatient diabetes education program. Educate patients on diabetes self-management, including blood glucose monitoring, medication administration, insulin management, and diabetes-related technology. Serve as a clinical resource regarding diabetes medications, glucose meters, continuous glucose monitoring systems, and treatment plans. Assist patients in achieving self-management goals through individualized education and counseling. Collaborate with dietitians and healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient care. Clinical Leadership & Consultation Serve as a consultant to physicians, staff, patients, and community organizations regarding diabetes care and specialty nursing practice. Act as a clinical role model and mentor for staff and interdisciplinary team members. Participate in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice improvements. Promote professional nursing standards and specialty best practices. Quality Improvement & Program Development Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating quality improvement initiatives. Monitor and support program outcomes related to patient education and diabetes management. Evaluate current practices and implement changes based on research findings, quality data, and regulatory requirements. Support educational program development and community outreach efforts. Education & Training Plan, coordinate, and deliver educational programs for patients, staff, and community members. Assess learning needs and develop appropriate educational interventions. Maintain current knowledge of diabetes care, nursing trends, and specialty certifications. Serve as a resource for ongoing staff development and competency enhancement. Safety & Compliance Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, confidentiality, and risk management policies. Support a safe care environment and compliance with regulatory standards. Follow Mercy policies regarding incident reporting, patient rights, and workplace safety procedures. Assist in evaluating equipment, supplies, policies, and procedures related to diabetes care services. Qualifications Required Education Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Required Licensure Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri or eligible compact state licensure. Current Advanced Practice Nurse license, as applicable, in the State of Missouri. Required Experience Three to five years of nursing experience in diabetes care, endocrinology, patient education, or a related specialty area. Required Certifications Certification in specialty practice area (preferred examples include Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist [CDCES] or other applicable specialty certification). Required Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of diabetes management, medications, glucose monitoring technology, and patient education principles. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills. Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and professional judgment. Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and collaborative practice skills. Commitment to continuous learning and evidence-based practice. Preferred Qualifications Experience providing outpatient diabetes education services. Experience teaching diabetes self-management classes in a group setting. Transforming the Health of Our Communities Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 195 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who was determined to help women and children in Dublin experiencing poverty. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill that dream. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, one of the first religious orders whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1856, they traveled to St. Louis. In the years to come, they would establish hospitals throughout the Midwest.
