Job Summary:
Coordinates Newborn Hearing Screening Program and provides specialized support services to maintain the efficient operations of the neonatology services provided by CHOP Newborn Care (CNBC).
Accountabilities :

- Provides safe and efficient direct patient care during Newborn Hearing Screening with consideration for age-specific accommodations. Oversees Hearing Screening Technicians and ensures daily coverage.

a. Creates schedule for hearing screening technicians ensuring daily coverage including weekdays, weekends and holidays.

b. Consistently utilizes two patient identifiers prior to performing Newborn Hearing Screening.

c. Recognizes and reports abnormal observations and/or changes in the patient's condition/progress to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner.

d. Responds to patient/family requests in a timely manner utilizing excellent customer service skills.
-
e. Demonstrates appropriate skill in utilization of the computer for documentation of hearing screening results, data retrieval, and communication, ensuring that unapproved abbreviations are not used.

f. Demonstrates competence in technical skills required for Newborn Hearing Screening procedure.

g. Administers the Newborn Hearing Screening Program including:
-
· Provide education regarding screening and hearing milestones to parents. Maintain up-to-date education pamphlets.
-
· Responsible for screening of all newborns in the Well-Baby Nursery Intensive Care Nursery (ICN), and Pediatric Unit (as indicated)

· Documentation of results in the medical record
-
· Provide screening result information to parents, hospital personnel and physicians
-
· Maintain State mandated reporting of hearing screening for all newborns at Doylestown Hospital
-
· If infant screening refers, provide parents with information regarding re-screening
-
· Perform outpatient re-screenings via Prenatal Testing Center (PNTC)
-
· Provide parents with information regarding follow-up procedures and audiologist appointment if necessary
-
· Monitor equipment and supplies necessary for screening
-
· Billing for services rendered

- Collaborates with patients' families and health care team members in order to achieve excellence in patient care.

a. Participates in patient/family education as appropriate to newborn hearing screening, and with consideration for the parent's ability to understand and respond.

b. Consistently communicates pertinent information regarding changes in patient status to team members.

c. Uses interpersonal communication techniques that show a willingness to accept and give constructive feedback for promoting professional excellence within the unit.

d. Informs and involves the parent and family prior to interventions or care being performed.
-
e. Recognizes the existence of cultural differences and utilizes appropriate resources available throughout the hospital to respond to the needs of the patient, family member and/or visitor.

- Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies, procedures, evidence-based guidelines and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

a. Maintains safety precautions while providing patient care including infection control isolation, infant positioning, physical environment, fall prevention, and work injury prevention.

b. Maintains equipment in good working order, reports equipment failure, and initiates corrective action.

c. Consistently utilizes two patient identifiers before performing Newborn Hearing Screening. Compares baby's ID bracelet to mother's ID bracelet.

- Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals.

a. Identifies professional goals, which reflect own strengths and weaknesses and seeks assistance for improvement of performance.

b. Attends and participates in meetings according to department standards.

c. Supports and participates in department, hospital, and evidenced based care quality initiatives

d. Participates in evidence-based care quality initiatives regarding Newborn Hearing Screening.

- Maintains clinical competency according to unit-specific standards.

a. Demonstrates competency in maintaining specific technological skills required as a Newborn Hearing Screening Technician.
-
b. Maintains technological competence through practice and ongoing participation in in-services and demonstration of skills.

- Offers administrative support to CHOP Newborn Care (CNBC).
-
Such duties and support given include, but are not limited to:
-
· Billing process for CHOP Newborn Care (neonatologists) services
-
· Daily and Monthly CNBC & ICN Census Reports
-
· Create database and enter data for CNBC Quality Initiatives and print reports for Neonatology Medical Director.
-
· Create database for Follow up Bilirubin Results (after discharge) including logging results and alerting physician.
-
· Fax Newborn Discharge Summaries from CNBC to community Primary Care Providers.
-
· Open, sort, distribute and prioritize mail, attach relevant files for information. Discern which mail to discard or forward without supervision.

· Prioritize workflow to ensure deadlines are met and requests are completed in a timely fashion.

· Maintain confidentiality of all information.

Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Qualifications:
-
HS Diploma/ GED
-
Minimum of 1-year administrative experience or equivalent training.

Billing and insurance codes knowledge.
-
Knowledge of medical terminology.
