Position Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides skilled nursing care in the correctional setting by implementing care plans established by the RN or Physician. The LPN focuses on treatment delivery, medication administration, monitoring, and patient education while operating under appropriate clinical supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer routine and complex medications, including controlled substances and injections, in accordance with orders and facility policy
- Conduct focused nursing assessments (e.g., wound evaluation, lung sounds, post-procedure checks) and report findings to the RN or Physician
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, suture removal, and post-surgical follow-up within housing units
- Provide one-on-one patient education regarding medication adherence, hygiene, and chronic disease self-management
- Assist with sick call and intake processes by collecting clinical data for RN evaluation.
- Respond to medical emergencies and assist with stabilization efforts
- Provide direct supervision of CMAs, where permitted, to support medication administration and clinical tasks
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the medical record
- Participate in infection control practices, CQI activities, and required trainings
Qualifications
- Active Licensed Practical Nurse license in the State of New Mexico
- CPR/BLS certification required
- Correctional or institutional healthcare experience preferred
