UPMC Hamot is looking for a full-time Nursing Assistant to join our MICU!This position is full-time rotating between 12 hour day shift and night shift. Weekends and holidays are also 12 hours. Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience.
Requires 6 months to 1 year of experience Direct Patient Care

Provide patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, feeding, toileting, transporting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients.

Perform UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants, including:
-
Vital signs, weights, intake & output (I&O)
-
Blood glucose testing and other point‑of‑care diagnostics
-
Telemetry monitor application/reapplication
-
Foley catheter care and urine specimen collection
-
Restraint application, monitoring, and removal per protocol
-
Hospital‑Acquired Condition (HAC) and patient safety indicator prevention
-
'Ticket to Ride' transportation procedures
-
Provide companionship and one‑to‑one supervision for patients as required.
-
Offer diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use.
-
Report changes in patient condition and provide feedback to the RN in a timely manner.
-
Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of a nursing assistant.
Environment, Safety, & Equipment
-
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe patient care environment:
-
Complete routine safety checks
-
Clean equipment, change bed linens, empty hampers
-
Keep hallways and rooms clear of equipment
-
Stock supplies and equipment in patient rooms and unit supply areas.
-
Perform messenger functions; order, charge/credit, and distribute supplies.
-
Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
-
Strictly adhere to all safety policies, standard precautions, and procedures related to bloodborne pathogen exposure.

Support workplace safety for both patients and staff.
Patient Support Activities
-
Deliver nourishments, pass meal trays, fill water pitchers, and distribute patient mail.

Assist with transporting patients within the hospital.

Respond to call lights and telephones.

Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.

Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.

Education & Training
-
High school diploma or GED required.
-
Successful completion of the UPMC Nursing Assistant Training Program.
-
Knowledge of body mechanics and safe patient transfer techniques.
-
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred.
-
Work permit required for individuals under 18 years of age.
Licensure, Certifications, and ClearancesRequired (within 30 days of hire)

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
-
Must meet AHA (American Heart Association) standards, including both didactic instruction and a hands‑on skills demonstration component.
