The Correctional RN works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and administrators to ensure the well-being of the incarcerated population. The Correctional RN utilizes their knowledge to address the specific challenges and limitations of the correctional environment while providing care to their patient population. This care includes both routine and emergency health care in a correctional facility setting.
Minimum Requirements:

Current Registered Nurse License for the state in which the nurse practices

Minimum of one year of correctional health care experience preferred

Current CPR if applicable

TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

Location: Roanoke, VA Shift: 6 PM - 6 AM (36/48 rotation) Hours: Alternating 36 & 48 hours/week Start: ASAP Orientation: 2-3 days Interview: Virtual screening; feedback in 48-72 hours
Role Overview
The Corrections RN provides comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated adults, using the full nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient needs in a secure facility.
Key Responsibilities

Assess patient needs through focused interviews, health histories, and ongoing monitoring.

Identify physiologic and psychosocial changes and respond appropriately.
-
Make referrals to physicians, NPs, dentists, or mental health providers.
-
Determine need for emergency care and administer medications per SOP and provider orders.
-
Develop and document care plans , nursing diagnoses, and interventions.
-
Prioritize and perform interventions based on patient condition and facility policies.

Provide patient education and revise care plans as needed.

Document patient responses to all interventions.

Supervise and support LPNs, CNAs, and other onsite healthcare staff.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements

Active RN license in state of practice

1+ year of corrections nursing experience
-
CPR certification (if applicable)
-
TB screening and health certificate per regulations
-
Completion of Amergis Competency Program (if required)

Strong communication skills and computer proficiency

Understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality

Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements
